THE THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Evil words can trap you in your own deceit
“The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.”
Proverbs 12:13 (KJV)
Genesis 8
Noah’s Cubit
Though the original cubit length is uncertain, it was most likely one of the royal cubits (about 19.8–20.6 in). If so, the Ark was actually bigger than the size described in most books today, which frequently use the short cubit.
Roughly, February 17
Genesis 7:11 (KJV), “In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.”
Genesis 7:12 (KJV), “And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.”
Genesis 7:24 (KJV), “And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.”
Genesis 8:3 (KJV), “And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.”
Genesis 8:4 (KJV), “And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.”
All of this is roughly about 11 months
God had obviously relayed to Noah what were clean and unclean animals prior to Leviticus
Genesis 8:20 (KJV), “And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.”
Nahum
Nahum did not write this book as a warning or “call to repentance” for the people of Nineveh. God had already sent them the prophet Jonah 150 years earlier with His promise of what would happen if they continued in their evil ways.
The author of the Book of Nahum identifies himself as Nahum (in the Hebrew “Consoler” or “Comforter”) the Elkoshite
Nahum 1:1 (KJV), “The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.”
There are many theories as to where that city was though there is no conclusive evidence. One such theory is that it refers to the city later called Capernaum (which literally means “the village of Nahum”) at the Sea of Galilee
Nineveh once had responded to the preaching of Jonah and turned from their evil ways to serve the Lord God. But 150 years later, Nineveh returned to idolatry, violence, and arrogance. Once again God sends one of His prophets to Nineveh warning of judgment in the form of the destruction of their city and exhorting them to repentance. Sadly, the Ninevites did not heed’s Nahum’s warning, and the city was brought under the dominion of Babylon.
Nahum 1
God relays to Nahum that He will not tolerate wickedness
Nahum 1:2 (KJV), “God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious; the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.”
God upholds the righteous
Nahum 1:7 (KJV), “The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”
Nahum’s notice to Nineveh
Nahum 1:14 (KJV), “And the Lord hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art vile.”
2 Corinthians 6
Do not put off God’s grace, the time is now
2 Corinthians 6:1-2 (KJV), “We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. 2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)”
Paul explains the meaning of being ‘unequally yoked’
2 Corinthians 6:14-16 (KJV), “14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
God’s gift of being equally yoked
2 Corinthians 6:17-18 (KJV), “17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”
Proverbs 12
Proverbs 12:1 (KJV), “Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.”
Strong’s Concordance ()1197) – ba’ar: brutish. Webster’s 1828 for brutish – 1. Insensible; stupid; as brutish men.
Proverbs 12:2 (KJV), “A good man obtaineth favour of the Lord: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.”
A good man
Strong’s Concordance (2896) – towb: beautiful. Brown-Driver-Briggs – good (ethical), right.
Obtains
Strong’s Concordance (6329) – puq: to bring out, furnish, promote, elicit. Webster’s 1828 for elicit – 1. To draw out; to bring to light; to deduce by reason or argument.
Evil words can trap you in your own deceit
Proverbs 12:13 (KJV), “The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.”
Instead of focusing on the world news, focus on God’s Word
Proverbs 12:25 (NASB1995), “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, But a good word makes it glad.”
Romans 12:2 (KJV), “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, hat ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Philippians 4:6 (NKJV), “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”
Romans 8
Stay in Christ and walk in freedom of the hardened law to God’s grace and freedom of sin and death
Romans 8:1-2 (KJV), “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”
Romans 8:3-4 (KJV), “3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
Be saved by grace through Jesus Christ and be free from the flesh
Romans 8:5-7 (KJV), “5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.”
The Spirit of God will give you eternal life
Romans 8:11 (KJV), “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”
Romans 8:12-13 (KJV), “12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”
The suffering we may endure here on earth will not compare to the glory we will receive
Romans 8:18 (KJV), “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
Our hope should be in being and staying with Jesus for eternity
Romans 8:24-25 (KJV), “24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.”
In our weaknesses, we cannot possibly know what all we should be praying for
Romans 8:26-27 (KJV), “26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
Once accepted as God’s elect, we are untouchable
Romans 8:33-36 (KJV), “33 Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
Psalm 44:22 (KJV), “Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.”
