THE THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God will give you all you need here on earth
“17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long. 18 For surely there is an end [NKJV 18 For surely there is a hereafter]; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.”
Proverbs 23:17-18 (KJV)
“19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.”
Matthew 6:19-20 (KJV)
Ecclesiastes 3
Solomon has told us, up to this point in Ecclesiastes, that nothing can happen that has not already happened.
In the first ten verses of this chapter, Solomon is stating that we live in a world of changes, that there are several events of time and conditions of human life. They are vastly different from one another. Yet occur promiscuously, and we are continually passing and repassing between them, as in the revolutions of every day and every year.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-10 (KJV), “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2 A time to …
| be born | die | Embrace | Refrain from embracing |
| Plant | pluck | Get | Lose |
| Kill [2026] | Heal | Keep | Cast away |
| Break down | Build up | Rend | sew |
| Weep | Laugh | Keep silence | Speak |
| Mourn | Dance | Love | Hate |
| Cast away stones | Gather stones together | War | peace |
9 What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth? 10 I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.”
The proof and illustration of it by the induction of particulars, twenty-eight in number, according to the days of the moon’s revolution, which is always increasing or decreasing between its full and change.
Some of these changes are purely the act of God, others depend more upon the will of man, but all are determined by the divine counsel.
Noteworthy: The word ‘kill’ has two entirely different meanings
Ecclesiastes 3:3 (KJV), “A time to kill [2026]….”
Exodus 20:13 (KJV), “Thou shalt not kill [7523].”
Strong’s Concordance (2026) – harag: to kill, slay. Brown-Driver-Briggs – 7. destroy, ruin.
Strong’s Concordance (7523) – ratsach: to murder, slay. Brown-Driver-Briggs – verb murder, slay.
Solomon reminds us that we should take no personal pride in what we earn or receive in life, they are all gifts from God
Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 (KJV), “12 I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. 13 And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.”
Another reminder that NOONE is permitted to take away or add to God’s Word
2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV), “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
Ecclesiastes 3:14 (KJV), “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.”
Mankind and beasts have two things in common
Ecclesiastes 3:19 (KJV), “For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.”
The age old question of where do pets (animals) go when they die
Ecclesiastes 3:21 (KJV), “Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?”
It is certain that ‘the spirit of the beast’ goes downwards to the earth; it dies with the body; it perishes and is gone at death. The soul of a beast is, at death, like a candle blown out—there is an end of it
Hosea 13
Ephraim is another name for Israel in Hosea
Yes, we know who the Saviour is
Hosea 13:4 (KJV), “Yet I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.”
Jeremiah 47
Jeremiah 46 began the section of Jeremiah’s prophecies against the nations surrounding Judah. Jeremiah 47 is the record of his prophecy against the Philistines, the ancient enemies and rivals of Israel.
Proverbs 23
A proverb on drinking and gluttonous
Do not be envious of those who have much here on earth for your reward is in heaven
Matthew 6:19-20 (KJV), “19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.”
Drunkenness and gluttonous will only lead to poverty
Proverbs 23:20-21 (KJV), “20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: 21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.”
