Matthew 27: 1 – 31

Jeremiah or Zechariah?

Matthew 27:9 (KJV), “Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy (Jeremiah) the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value.”

Zechariah 11:12 (KJV), “And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.”

The next verse contains prophecies from both prophets

Matthew 27:10 (KJV), “And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.”

Jeremiah 32:6-9 (KJV), “⁶ And Jeremiah said, The word of the Lord came unto me, saying, ⁷ Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it.  ⁸ So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the Lord, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.  ⁹ And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.”

Zechariah 11:13 (KJV), “And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord.”

How they are here said to be spoken by Jeremy (Jeremiah) is a difficult question; but the credit of Christ’s doctrine does not depend upon it; for that proves itself perfectly divine, though there should appear something human as to small circumstances in the penmen of it.

A few hypotheses:

1. Some have thought that Jeremy (Jeremiah) was added by some scribe; some think that the whole volume of the prophets, being in one book, and the prophecy of Jeremiah put first, it might not be improper.

2. The Jews used to say, The spirit of Jeremiah was in Zechariah, and so they were as one prophet. 

3. Some suggest that it was spoken by Jeremiah, but written by Zechariah; or that Jeremiah wrote the ninth, tenth, and eleventh chapters of Zechariah.

Pilot questioned Jesus but He did not reply

Matthew 27:12-14 (KJV), “¹² And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.  ¹³ Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?  ¹⁴ And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

Psalm 38:13-14 (KJV), “¹³ But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.  ¹⁴ Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.”

Hosea 8:1 (KJV), “Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.”

Who, what, and why an Eagle?

Proverbs 30:19 (KJV), “The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.”

Deuteronomy 28:49 (KJV), “The Lord shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand.”

God chose the eagle, considered powerful and unstoppable, to demonstrate His sovereign control over everything

Obadiah 4 (KJV), “Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord.”

Jeremiah 49:22 (KJV), “Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.”

Isaiah 40:31 (KJV), “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

We make everything our own personal god besides God our Father and Creator

Hosea 8:5-6 (KJV), “⁵ Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency?  ⁶ For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.”

Deuteronomy 12:30-31 (KJV), “³⁰ Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.  ³¹ Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God: for every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.”

Hosea 8:14 (KJV), “For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.”

If and when God places you in a given situation where you are being chastened do not flee from it, thinking it will be better any place else, as God is shaping and molding you

Hebrews 12:6-11 (KJV), “⁶ For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.  ⁷ If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?  ⁸ But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.  ⁹ Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?  ¹⁰ For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.  ¹¹ Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”

God told Jeremiah to tell Israel and Judah for the remnants to remain where they were and not to go to Egypt thinking they will evade further persecution

Jeremiah 42:18-22 (KJV), “¹⁸ For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more. ¹⁹ The Lord hath said concerning you, O ye remnant of Judah; Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have admonished you this day.  ²⁰ For ye dissembled in your hearts, when ye sent me unto the Lord your God, saying, Pray for us unto the Lord our God; and according unto all that the Lord our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it.  ²¹ And now I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God, nor any thing for the which he hath sent me unto you.  ²² Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go and to sojourn.”

Ezekiel 40

A New City, a New Temple

Ezekiel 40:3 (KJV), “And he brought me thither, and, behold, there was a man, whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed; and he stood in the gate.”

Ezekiel 1:7 (KJV), “And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.”

Daniel 10:6 (KJV), “His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.”

Revelation 1:15 (KJV), “And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.”
