Acts 21  Warnings on the Journey to Jerusalem

Details

Details

Paul sails to Tyre and there the Holy Spirit warns him not to go to Jerusalem

Acts 21:4 (KJV), “And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.”

No-one could stop Paul from going to Jerusalem

Acts 21:12-14 (KJV), 12 And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem.  13 Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.  14 And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.”

James, the second of the James’ apostles, was the only apostle left in Jerusalem

Acts 21:18 (KJV), “And the day following Paul went in with us unto James; and all the elders were present.”

Paul was told that an unlimited number of Jews had converted to Christianity

Acts 21:20 (KJV), “And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law.”

Strong’s Concordance (3461) – murias: ten thousand, a myriadThayer’s Greek Lexicon – b. plural with the genitive equivalent to an innumerable multitude, an unlimited number (like our myriads).

[1] The word signifies, not thousands, but ten thousands. Even among the Jews, who were most prejudiced against the gospel, yet there were great multitudes that received it; for the grace of God can break down the strongest holds of Satan. (Henry)

Paul was insistent not to hold any converts to the law of Moses

Acts 21:21 (KJV), “And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs.”

The elders wanted Paul to teach the Jews that is was okay to observe the law but only the Gentiles to dismiss it

Acts 21:22-25 (KJV), 22 What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come.  23 Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men which have a vow on them; 24 Them take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law.  25 As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication.”

2 Timothy 1

God did not give us His salvation for us but for His purposes and calling

2 Timothy 1:9 (KJV), “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.”

Because of Jesus, we are no longer dead in our sins

2 Timothy 1:10 (KJV), “But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”

Job 39   The Lord Reveals His Omnipotence to Job (cont.)

Prophecy of Jesus

Job 39:9 (KJV), “Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?”

Strong’s Concordance (7214) – reem: a wild ox

Proverbs 3

Isaiah 60             Israel will be saved

Acts 20, 1 Timothy, & Job 38

Acts 20 Journeys in Greece

Acts 20:4 (KJV), “And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.”

And then to Troas

Acts 20:6 (KJV), “And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days.”

Paul set out to Jerusalem, to be there for Pentecost, knowing there would be trouble

Acts 20:22-23 (KJV), 22 And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: 23 Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.”

Paul warns the elders of Ephesus (called to now in Miletus) about false teachers

Acts 20:28-31 (KJV), 28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.  29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.  30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.  31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.”

It is better to give than to receive

Acts 20:35 (KJV), “I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

1 Timothy 6

Paul continues to instruct Timothy with regards to elders of the church

1 Timothy 6:9-10 (KJV), But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.  10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Paul knows that Timothy, being very young, will see older men professing a greater knowledge and profaning the real gospel

1 Timothy 6:20-21 (KJV), 20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.”
