Acts 19 Paul at Ephesus
Were the Ephesians indeed baptized?
Acts 19:2-4 (KJV), “2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. ”
If you look back to the previous chapter, Apollos was baptized, and was in Ephesus, but knew not of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 18:25 (KJV), “This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. ”
While in Ephesus, Apollos baptized only in the baptism of John.
Once Paul explained Jesus to them more accurately, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 19:5 (KJV), “5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
Miraculous works of Paul in Ephesus
Acts 19:11-12 (KJV), “11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: 12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.”
Strong’s Concordance (4676) – soudarion: a handkerchief, a head cloth (for the dead). Thayer’s Greek Lexicon – a cloth for wiping the perspiration from the face and for cleaning the nose.
Strong’s Concordance (4612) – simikinthion: (a workman’s) apron. Thayer’s Greek Lexicon – a narrow apron, or linen covering, which workmen and servants were accustomed to wear.
Only Paul was able to perform these miracles in Ephesus
Acts 19:13-15 (KJV), “13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?”
The siler craftsman and others, who believed in Diana, caused a major ruckus in Ephesus
Acts 19:28-29 (KJV), “28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. 29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.”
1 Timothy 5
Paul explains who a real widow is
1 Timothy 5:3-5 (KJV), “3 Honour widows that are widows indeed. 4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. 5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.”
Not in the biblical sense a real widow.
How people can take scripture out of context
1 Timothy 5:8 (KJV), “But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”
This is only talking about widows.
A widow is a woman whose husband has died. Often in Scripture, when widows are referred to, it appears to carry the idea of a woman whose husband has died who also has no one to provide for her. According to Paul, a widow who received financial and material support from the church had to meet certain qualifications.
First and foremost, the widow had to be truly in need and completely alone in the world:
“But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God”. (v.4) “But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God”.
Paul condones drinking wine
1 Timothy 5:23 (KJV), “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.”
Job 37 Continuation of chapter 36
Proverbs 28
Isaiah 59 Separated from God
God promises to never forsake you but you can forsake God
Isaiah 59:1-3 (KJV), “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. 3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.”
The Redeemer of Zion
Isaiah 59:15b-16 (KJV), “15a and the Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment. 16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.”
Isaiah 59:20-21 (KJV), “20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord. 21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and forever.”
Now we know where Paul got it
Isaiah 59:17 (KJV), “17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.
”Ephesians 6:13-20 (KJV), “13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
