Acts 18, 1 Timothy 4, Job 36, Proverbs 27, & Isaiah 58

Acts 18  Paul ministering at Corinth

Paul realized that the Jews were not receptive to the gospel

Acts 18:6 (KJV), “And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean; from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.”

The leader of the synagogue, Crispus (a Jewish religious leader), accepts Christ

Acts 18:8 (KJV), “And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.”

Paul always obeyed the Lord

Acts 18:9-11 (KJV), Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: 10 For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.  11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.”

Paul sales to Ephesus with Priscilla and Aquila

Acts 18:18-19 (KJV), 18 And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.

19 And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.”

Paul goes to Galatia

Acts 18:23 (KJV), “And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.”

Apollos in Ephesus (not yet baptized in the Spirit)

Acts 18:24-25 (KJV), “And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. ”

1 Timothy 4        The Great Apostasy

1828 Websters – APOS’TASY, 1. An abandonment of what one has professed; a total desertion, or departure from one’s faith or religion.

1 Timothy 4:1-5 (KJV), “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.  For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.”

Job 36   Elihu Proclaims God’s Goodness

Proverbs 27

Only concentrate on today, don’t worry about tomorrow

Proverbs 27:1 (KJV), “Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”

Isaiah 58

Even today, should we keep holy the Sabbath?

Isaiah 58:13-14 (KJV), 13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: 14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.”

The Jewish dilemma: As gentiles started to receive salvation, what traditions should they maintain?

Acts 15:19-20 (KJV), 19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: 20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.”

Sabbath-keeping was not one of the commands the apostles felt was necessary to force on Gentile believers. It is inconceivable that the apostles would neglect to include Sabbath-keeping if it was God’s command for Christians to observe the Sabbath day.  In the book of Acts, whenever a meeting is said to be on the Sabbath, it is a meeting of Jews and/or Gentile converts to Judaism, not Christians.

The law does not say the Sabbath (Saturday) is THE day to worship

Exodus 20:8-11 (KJV), Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

Gentile Christians met on Sunday

Acts 20:7 (KJV), “And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.”

1 Corinthians 16:2 (KJV), “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”

When should Christians practice the Sabbath?

Romans 14:5 (KJV), “One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.”

Colossians 2:16 (KJV), “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days.”1 Corinthians 8:9 (KJV), “But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.”
